This would have been useful recently for the climate strikes carousel item which invited people to join the march on September 27th. We could have simply set an expiration date on that item and watched it disappear on September 28th. Instead, we forgot to remove it and it stayed there on the front page for over a week before we remembered to remove it manually (which is incidentally pretty risk-prone, see this other issue).
