As an editor, I would like to be able to toggle automatic transliteration for page and post slugs when the page title is using non-Latin letters.
WordPress generates slugs for pages and posts automatically based on the page title. When the page title is written in a non-Latin writing system, WordPress retains the non-Latin characters in the slug too.
While this setup is technically working, in the URI encoding, each non-Latin character is replaced by 3 to 9 ASCII characters, rendering the final URL both humanly unreadable and also potentially extremely long (if the original page title was already very long to begin with).
The current practice is that web editors manually override original slugs with their Latin transliteration. While the need is probably shared across all non-Latin writing NROs/LOFFs, the solution might differ from language to language (different transliteration rules might apply even to languages using broadly similar alphabets). Apparently there are a few WordPress plugins catering for this need, this seems to be one of the most promising ones, but I haven’t tested any of them yet: https://wordpress.org/plugins/serbian-transliteration/
