Bom dia! A big one! Data tracking for the Timeline Block, preferred Googled News source button, hidden H1 on the homepage, … There’s a lot happening in this release. Let’s explore.
Features 🛠️
PLANET-8205 Carrousel Header: occupy part of the image with a white background, just like Page Headers
Accessibility updates for the Mobile version of the Carousel Header. The font size has been adjusted, to give more weight to the headings. Its been given a bit more space, and a white background to the first row of the heading (taking a little bit of space of the image).
PLANET-8180 Add preferred Google news source buttons to Posts
Following up on a submitted request, an “Add as a preferred source on Google” Button has been added on Posts. You can find this on Planet 4 > Social > Social share options and activate it from there. Default button links to https://www.google.com/preferences/source?q=greenpeace.org but the domain will automatically change up based on the website. (eg. account for .ch and .org.au websites).
More documentation is coming soon in the Handbook. For now: check out the documentation provided from Google here.
PLANET-8023 Optimize Database Queries: Single Posts
Some experimentation with the Query Monitor plugin! Analyzed a single posts to identify the most time-consuming database queries, as well as queries repeatedly triggered by the same source (e.g., wp_get_object_terms). Where possible: the devs reduced, combined, and/or optimized!
PLANET-7830 Limit blocks to be used within Quote block to just paragraph
Previously, it was possible to add pretty much any block inside a Quote block. That’s no longer the case, and a limit to only Paragraphs has been set.
PLANET-8246 Analytics: add data attributes to new Timeline block
In order to track engagement in GA4/Mixpanel on the new Timeline block, the standard data attributes have been added. This structure is the same as most other blocks.
PLANET-8250 Footer accessibility: Give context to social media buttonss
All social media anchor (<a>) tags now include both the organization and the platform in the accessible name (e.g., “Greenpeace International LinkedIn”). Making sure a screen reader announces it properly.
PLANET-8238 Main navigation accessibility: update names for all mobile submenus to use contextual labels
The accessible names of each submenu container have been updated, to a clear label that matches its parent navigation item (e.g., “Issues we work on submenu”, “Get involved submenu”).
PLANET-8235 Homepage accessibility: add a visually hidden H1 heading
The homepage was missing an <h1> tag. That has now been added, to provide proper document structure and context for assistive technologies. However: since a visible title doesn’t fit the current UI, this is visually hidden.
